The Legal Department provides the District with legal counsel in all areas of school and governmental law.  It addresses the legal aspects of daily school operations and provides counsel, guidance and training for all Board Members and District employees in the performance of their duties.  It reviews policies, procedures and practices to maintain compliance with changing state and federal laws.  It prepares operational documents for the District, including Board Resolutions, contracts and intergovernmental agreements.  It prepares legal opinions for the Board of School Inspectors as well as for the school administration.  The Chief Officer for Legal Services attends all Board meeting and other administrative meetings. 

The Legal Department represents management in all labor relations matters.  The Chief Officer for Legal Services acts at the management spokesperson in all collective bargaining matters.  The Legal Department assists with the interpretation of the District’s collective bargaining agreements and represents management in any labor grievance which may arise.

The Legal Department represents the District in court and before administrative agencies.  On the occasion where outside counsel is used, the Legal Department coordinates the use of those services.
