Washington Academy students seventh-grader Alejandra Rodriguez Fernandez and sixth-grader Dion Northern competed against three other teams in the Joliet Chamber of Commerce Innovation Competition Finale. The students pitched their "I.chew.D" idea to the "Sharks" to help classmates combat stress and reduce gum chewing, nail biting, and chewing IDs. Although the students didn't win the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce competition, Washington Junior High School Principal Shavon Pittman and Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse surprised the students and teacher Jessica Barwa with a $900 check to launch the program at the school!
